Built as permanent shelters since man mastered the art of construction, the Polynesian style is the quintessential "Tiki Hut". Though the styles vary a little, Polynesian Tiki Huts are popular from the South Pacific all the way to Hawaii. Constructed from coco or hardwood trunks, they are thatched simply using sable palm leaves or weaved palm fronds. The framing design has endured due to its strong structure and easily mendable roof - an important factor when building in a typhoon and tropical storm prone area of the globe.
The Polynesian Tiki Hut was made popular in the 1950s in the United States when a strong stylistic influence emanated from the Hawaiian Islands. For mainland residents, the Tiki Hut was an easy way to vicariously escape to a tropical paradise. Tiki lounges and bars started to pop up everywhere around the country - the most famous of which was Trader Vic's. With the advent of cheap international travel, the fad died down, but today there has emerged a retro-revival of this style. With busy schedules and 2.1 children, families want once again to escape to their own backyard tropical paradise. Email us for sample images. |

Less of a traditional Tiki and more of an art piece, the Indonesian garden house is more structured. Posts are usually square and framed with carved capitals and bases. Roofs use more architectural thatching or shingles. The colors are also often richer due to the use of native Teak lumber. Like Japanese tea houses, they are better adapted for individuals looking for a more contemporary look. Email us for sample images. |

Simple in nature, the Japanese teahouse is all about clean lines. Usually lower in height, they cater to floor level seating on Tatami mats (rice straw padded flooring) and strategically placed to offer the best vistas of water features or Zen rock gardens. Sliding rice paper walls, curved roof features and detailed joinery make this style a favorite among those individuals with a taste for ancient Asian cultures that believed in the "Art of Perfection." Our design team has great resources for custom water features and Asian antiques. Email us for sample images. |

Characterized by their round shape, they are usually built using a mix of mud, cow dung and straw for an adobe style wall. Though unappetizing, this mixture of materials provides a strong structure and a great heat barrier keeping the dwelling cool during the day. The modern day translation is the use of the round shape and concrete walls using special stucco mix for texture and authentic looking detail. Thatching consists of Dekriet Reed or Berg grass. Inspired by the dwellings built by isolated Amazon villages and particularly the Dani tribes of Papua New Guinea, these huts are characterized by their elevated construction nestled in the jungle canopy. Simple open-aired platforms hidden among the thick trees can be passed without notice. These are ITH favorites due to the incredible perspective of sleeping with the clouds in your own little jungle canopy hut. Vine and zip line systems for the Tarzan blooded souls can be rigged for those who don't mind stretching the budget beyond your typical American backyard tree house. Email us for sample images. |
